New Forum Software

Hi Guys,    I mentioned in the thread about spam that we're looking at upgrading the forum software in use on SVNforum.org. As such, we were wondering if any forum users would like to be involved in those efforts? It would help us a lot to have some input from users of the board...    We're looking at choosing between PHPBB3, SMF and vBulletin initially and then we can consider more details of the change. Does anyone have preference, thoughts or any other feedback at this stage?    We plan to be very careful to make this as painless as possible for users and to maintain existing links and user credentials etc, but as I say, having some user involvement on this front would be really helpful.    Best Wishes,    Ian

Ian,    I have tried these three for different sites. In order of preference:  vBulletin  PHPBB3  SMF    IMHO SMF was the toughest to administer.    --Mahesh

I appreciate the response Mahesh.    SMF was the one we chose in my previous job (I built http://community.plus.net/forum ) and I liked the power of the admin interface there, even if it can be a bit complicated.    I agree overall though - I think that vBulletin probably has the most to offer. Then again in this case I won't be the one installing it and I think the decision could come down to which one is the best at importing the current PHPBB2 data.    Ian

I'm not an active member here (more of a lurker than anything), but migrating http://www.jqueryhelp.com/ from phpBB2 to phpBB3 was pretty straightforward. Prior to that, I had very limited administrative experience with the software, and no experience migrating versions, and it all went really well. (It's since been merged into jQuery.com and they use Zoho Discussions now, but that's besides the point.)
